There is no literate Nigerian who doesn't know something about Nnamdi Kanu. The media has made him the most popular Igbo youth as of today and that was because he was arrested for supporting the call for Biafra, a former country which tried to gain independence from Nigeria in the former Eastern region headed by the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.Nnamdi Kanu made a call for people from the former Eastern region which now comprises of the South East and South south states to rise up again to seek for independence from Nigeria which he claimed has excluded and marginalized the region from power for too long.He is the leader of an organization named Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and also ran the famous Radio Biafra through which they used to spread their message of hate against the Nigerian nation and the need for the resurrection of Biafra. The Federal government has tried to shut down the illegal radio station in several places but has not been able to shut down their social medial platforms on the web.Nnamdi Kanu had made the call for Biafra on radio and in several places such as at a World Igbo congresss meeting in the USA and the eyes of the Nigerian government has been on him for a while especially since Radio Biafra became popular. When he arrived Nigeria in October 2015, he was reportedly arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) and has been held since then without freedom of movement. News of his arrest had encouraged a lot of protests by Pro-Biafrans in states that were formerly under the Republic of Biafra in the South East and South South region. In November 2015, it was reported that Nnamdi Kanu was officially charged to before an Abuja Magistrate Court headed by Chief Magistrate .S. Usman for criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation by the DSS and on December 2015, the same court discharged and acquitted him of all the charges and ordered for his release. About 24 hrs later, Justice Adeniyi Ademola from the Federal high court in Abuja ruled that the continued detention of Mr. Kanu was unlawful. However, the DSS went ahead and charged him before a Federal high court in Abuja on a fresh six-count charge of treason and managing the affairs of an unlawful society. Nnamdi Kanu expressed his lack of faith in the court since the DSS has shown that they can disrespect court orders. The court Justice then excused himself from the case while Nnamdi Kanu was later taken back to detention. In January 2016, Nnamdi Kanu was transferred from the DSS detention to Kuje prison in Abuja at the order of a Federal high court. He has been without his right of freedom of movement sine October 2015 even though he has not been convicted of any crime yet.
