It seems that in Nigeria, it's becoming common for a member of a political party to switch to another party almost as soon as he wins an election. In some other countries the society and law may frown at it. In most cases, it would be the only thing needed by the party to easily remove the elected candidate from power even without going to court by using the power of a recall or impeachmentIn the case of Nigeria, it seems the law allows or encourages party switching as in the case of the Imo state governor who was elected under the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance.Rochas Okorocha was the governorship candidate of APGA during the April 2011 general elections. He won the elections based on the popular votes he got and with APGA's machinery. However, as the win of political change charged up the air with campaigns of forming a single formidable opposition party to the PDP, he decided to join the APC together with some of his followers. APGA was not happy with that since they had earlier publicly stated they didn't support joining the APC.Well, it so happens that APGA is now heading to court with the hope of restoring the mandate and vote the party won on behalf of Okorocha. We are not sure how it will all end up in court but APGA remains a powerful force in South East politics and it may end up being a stumbling block to Okorocha's goodwill.
