One of the reasons why I think Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa is because of it's deeply rooted culture of protecting the life of young babies. Both the born and unborn children are highly valued in Nigeria and that's why abortion is deeply frowned at in Nigeria no matter how the baby got into the woman's womb even if it was a result of rape. Many Nigerians believe that children are of a good value and should never be aborted in any case. In some cases, even Nigerian husbands would not mind risking the life of his wife rather than lose that of his unborn child since he could marry plenty wives. However, as time gradually changed and there is a Westernized form of government in place, the culture of protecting unborn children have been gradually withered down as there is a law that allows women to abort children if their life is at risk but in the past, it was considered a taboo.I don't know of any ethnic group in Nigeria whose culture supports the killing or extermination of unborn children because no child is considered useless or of no value. There are even Nigerians who would be willing to pay to adopt children and that's' why there are a good number of baby factories in Nigeria where mothers who are not willing to raise children yet would rather sell their kids for up to $1500. Yes, many Nigerian couples who can't have children or just want to adopt children would rather prefer buying them from mothers who don't want them. I think giving up one's child for adoption when you are not ready to raise them is much better than killing the unborn child.Nigerian women get pregnant when they have sex with men who are fertile and while some of them do have sex with men willingly, some are forced into it and so may be considered rape victims. What does a woman or the society do when there is an issue of rape involved? Well, I don't think that allowing abortion should be the solution because it stops the life of the child, a child that could have been important in life and may help the society to advance. It would be better if the woman gives up the child for adoption if she was not willing to raise him or her.Nigeria is in West Africa and we have our own way of valuing life which is quite different from the way Europeans and Americans value human life. To Nigerians, there is never a justifiable reason to kill a child most especially one that is yet to be born. Every child has a right to live and can contribute to our society, one way or another and should never be aborted even if he came through rape.Recently, I read a report about how the United Nations(U.N.) was pressuring the Nigerian government into fully legalizing abortion and I guess the next thing they'd want is also for us to legalize same sex marriage. I think Nigerians should know better that just because we practice democracy doesn't mean we don't have our own lifestyle or culture. There are things our ancestors consider to be a taboo and abomination and we shouldn't be the ones doing those things in the name of civilization. Being civilized doesn't mean we should stop being Nigerians. Things like Abortion and gay marriage are not accepted by Nigerian culture and so should be avoided else we would no longer be truly Nigerian.
