I recently watched a YouTube video on Channels TV which featured the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo speaking on the current Biafran agitation. One of the statements he made was that Biafra was dead. I guess he was talking about the Biafra which he fought against in the 1960s. Is Biafra really dead? Well, to Obasanjo, I think it is because he was alive during the Biafran war and helped lead Nigerian in the battle against old Biafra during which Biafran army was defeated and surrendered back to Nigeria through the hands of Philip Effiong in Amichi town in Nnewi local government area of Anambra state. Philip has said that he surrendered because he wanted peace as the war could have caused more casualties on both sides. Both Nigeria and Biafra suffered during the 3 year old war as many people died and the people who fought on the Biafran side were basically fighting to survive because they've been pushed to the wall for too long. The physical war has ended over 40 years ago and it's now 2016. To think that there are people still clamouring for the tate of Biafra shows that the spirit of Biafra is still alive. It's not just an idea but a spiritual revolution. People who were formerly part of Biafra have seen that they've been excluded from the Federal government for so long despite the fact that they contribute most to Nigeria's economy through oil and commerce now want to opt out of the Federation and it's something the government and right thinking politicians should look into. The cry for Biafra may not be as powerful as violent as it once was in the 1960s but its capturing the minds and hearts of millions of people and by the time you call for votes, people would want to vote for it just like the case in South Sudan - Africa's newest state.Today, people are gradually buying into the idea or resurrecting Biafra and many of them would want to do so as long as it's legal and doesn't involve carrying arms but that doesn't mean that they won't carry arms if it was justified to do so. The Nigerian government doesn't need to wait till it gets more serious before trying to do something about it because Biafra is not really dead as it seems that the spirit of the dead soldiers of Biafra have take over their children.I believe that Biafra is alive and for now, she lives in the hearts of people within the former Biafran region who feel neglected and excluded from the national cake. It would only be a matter of time if Biafra becomes a real country with a real government and borders because they've been underestimated for too long.Ideally, there really is nothing wrong with Biafra or any people wanting to opt out of Nigeria and form a country of their own as countries across the world support this and it's peaceful but for that to take action, there needs to be a referendum.
