A few days ago, I saw in the news that at the PDP convention, a number of governors walked away from the party to express their grievances at what the party leadership is doing. Reports are already in the news that those governors have defected to form a new opposition party. This increases the number of former PDP members swinging to the opposition and becoming a problem for the party since it reduces their membership and is almost turning them to a minor party. The Ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has been the major political party in Nigeria since the 4th republic and after the military transition to civil rule. In 1999, a retired army general, Olusegun Obasanjo was the candidate most preferred by both military chiefs and civilians to lead the nation as her new president. Obasanjo became the most favoured candidate at the PDP primaries, winning Alex Ekwueme to become the party's candidate and eventual winner of the presidential elections.Since 1999, the party has been held strong and together as one family, under 1 umbrella, an umbrella which is also the logo of the party. Obasanjo was president for 2 terms till 2007 when he handed power over to Yaradua, another PDP candidate. While he was president, the PDP was more united than they currently are.The power of the PDP has remained a steady force which had been mostly centered around the ruling president who is also seen as a stabilizing force for the party. However, there seems to have been a growing dissatisfaction by members of how the party business is being done and many have been calling for the sack of the current chairman, Tukur, a man who seems to be supported by the President.Troubles from within the PDP seem to be growing probably amidst the growing awareness by members of the threat posed by another growing opposition party, the APC, a party which is seen as one that could turn the PDP to a minority party, just after 14 years in power. The PDP leadership may be forced to adjust their strategy and leadership in order to win back members whose loyalty is gradually turning south. PDP is having problems in Anambra and Rivers state and this is giving more advantage to the opposition parties. At the national level, new parties are being formed while the leadership can hardly do nothing.PDP would have to repair the leaking holes in their umbrella and be more accommodating so that her members may remain loyal to the party now that elections are around the corner.
