At the rate at which PDP governors are crossing over to the APC, one would think that the PDP is no longer the ruling party or has simply lost discipline in its membership. Party loyalty used to be held in higher esteem during the time when Obasanjo was active and president of Nigeria but now, it seems that as the former generals tend to stay less active in the PDP, the more former PDP members find it easier to cross carpet to opposition parties. There is a new party in town called the APC, formed mainly by the 2 leading opposition parties(ACN and CPC) and now it seems they are giving the PDP a run for their money. As at a few days ago, 4 more governors who were formerly members of the PDP and then new PDP have announced after a meeting that they are now members of the APC. When you check the number of PDP governors now in Nigeria, that number is about 18 while the APC has 16 in it's rank. The other two parties, APGA and LP both have one governor each in their group. APGA originally had 2 goveronors but he defected to the APC as at the launch of the party.Bottom line is that APC is growing stronger and if they could get PDP governors to defect from the ruling party, chances are that other junior party members like Senators and Reps would soon cross carpet. However, just because these governors have moved to the APC doesn't mean they have grassroot support automatically. There are rumours that the governors are migrating since they are not sure of a second term under the PDP. The governors of Rivers, Adamawa, Kwara and Kano were the ones that just recently switched camps. The PDP has announced that they don't feel threatened by growing number of the opposition since that's the beauty of democracy as they should be a freedom of association. I wonder what game they are planning to play when 2015 elections come around the corner.
