It already happened and the incumbent governor has already won a re-election to stay in office for 4 more years - His tenure will now expire by 2016. In Edo state, it happens that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) is growing stronger unlike what used to be in the past, before the former NLC leader came into politics by joining the ACN. After Saturday's election which held on the of 14th of July 2012, he won in a landslide victory by polling over 75%(477,488 votes) of the votes in an election that witnessed a large turnout of voters. The state had over one million, six hundred and fifty five thousand, seven hundred and seventy six (1,555,776) registered voters and after the final results were out, about were counted as valid votes.Oshiomhole's closest rival from the PDP, Charles E. Airhiarvbere only got about 23% of the votes by getting only 144,235 votes showing that the ACN really had good approval rating from the masses. The party still has a stronghold in the state either because of the party, the personality of Adams or both. How did ACN repeat this winning victory in the state? Perhaps it was because of the performance of the governor and his identifying with the masses who are the major power behind popular votes. It may also have to do with the power of the incumbent being in office. In politics, an incumbent governor does have some advantage over a new candidate since he is always in the public eye and in that way has easy access to free advertising of his programmes and policies. A new candidate would need to work twice as hard to beat an incumbent governor.
