Election for the 2012 governorship position in Ondo state will be holding on the 20th of October and there are already a list of strong contenders for the office.Ondo state is one of the few states in Nigeria which has a different election time table from other states and this was due to the fact that the incumbent governor, Olusegun Mimiko came into office as a result of his victory in an election tribunal case he filed seeking justice in the results. The INEC results in April 2007 had earlier given the win to Olusegun Agagu of the PDP but his tenure was cut short after Mimiko won the court case in February 23 2009 and was later sworn in as governor.Mimiko became governor of Ondo state on the 24th of February 2009 and his office is expected to expire by February 2013.Olusegun Mimiko who many also describe an an Iroko in Ondo state politics meaning that he is a well rooted politician in the state who will remain a dominant factor. He is the front person in the race and being the incumbent, he is the most likely to win his re-election bid. He is from the Labour party, the only state where the Labour party has a governor. The popular opinion already is that Mimiko will win Ondon again, but who knows?Secondly is the governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Rotimi Akeredolu. He is the man expected help the ACN to win the last state in the South west outside its grasp.
During the last governorship election in the South western states, the ACN practically swept all the states in the South west and some through the election tribunal but with the exception of Ondo state. If Akeredolu wins, it would help the ACN maintain a stronghold in the region foro quite a while and help achieve what many ACN stalwarts like Tinubu have been calling regional and economic integration. The party and the contestant are seen as the most likely winners in the election if not for the Iroko factor which may again be an obstacle to their efforts. The third on the list of the People's Democratic Party with their governorship aspirant, Chief Olusola Oke.The ruling PDP once held sway in many states in Southern Nigeria especially during the time of Obasanjo as president but their control has been whittled down over the years especially with Tinubu's spearheaded campaign to help the ACN save the South West from PDP's dominance. From being a sole ACN governor in Lagos state, Tinubu has probably helped the ACN to win more states in South Western Nigeria than the PDP. The PDP still has something to prove in Ondo state being that the President, Obasanjo and PDP stalwarts all have their eyes set on this race in Ondo which is a special one.
If the PDP wins in Ondo, it may be a turning point for the party to again start their winning streak to recapture the South West into their fold. The election is coming up this week. Who wins?
