It is very hard to win an election in Nigeria if you didn't have a Nigerian name. If you take a look at all the presidents and most governors in Nigeria who have won elections, you'd notice that they all had one thing in common - A Nigerian name. What's in a Nigerian name? Well, it's a name that identifies you as a Nigerian and shows that you didn't just fall off the sky. I'm not saying that one can't win an election in Nigeria if he/she were bearing a name like Anna Nicole but you may have to do more work just to win votes when competing against names like Audu Garba, Nnamdi Okeke or Adedayo Oke. You'd notice that all those other names look a bit more Nigerian than someone bearing just English names.A Nigerian name first of all identifies you with your tribe and chances are they are going to vote for you in bulk whenever you run for an electoral office. The political situation Nigeria is so biased that people tend to first of all vote along ethnic lines, then religious lines and then maybe economic lines. It can be hard to get votes from Nigerians if they don't find any connection with you on the natural level.Having a Nigerian name can help someone overcome a lot of obstacles they would rather not face. Politicians at times even try to get votes outside their ethnic group by doing favours for people of other tribes such as offering employment, building an industry, sharing money or even getting a chieftaincy title. Every name has a meaning and it tends to define what kind of person the bearer is. Your Nigerian name can either help you or work against you depending on how voters feel about it.
