Unlike the USA where one has to speak good English and dress well just to be listened to or make an impressive campaign to win elections, one just needs to be people friendly by giving out food items to people in Nigeria. Most Nigerians are more likely to vote for candidates who give them gifts before an election rather than build infrastructure later on and it's not that they are a bunch of hungry and poor people but because they know that politicians would hardly have a solid impact in their lives by the time they get into office. Most Nigerians find it hard to trust politicians and their promises made before elections and that's why it's easier for politicians to even draw their attention by giving them gifts in form of cash or food items such as life goats, chickens and bags of rice. Nigerians are more likely to vote for you ig you give them tangible items rather than speaking the Queens English.A lot of politicians in Nigeria might be very well educated but they understand well what it takes to win elections and one important factor is finance. They need enough funds to campaign for votes or at least public appeal and most of such funds would be converted as tangible items for gifts to people.Apart from the fact that they want their rewards before rather than after, Nigerians also have this culture of respecting people who come to them with gifts rather than empty handed. It's like organizing a wedding or birthday party and people bring gifts to you to show appreciation. That is the kind of life Nigerians want. You are more likely to get favours from a Nigeria if you visit his/her home with gifts in your band even if it's a life chicken or bottle of palm wine or red wine. They believe that he who comes with gifts deserves to be listened to and that's why politicians make it a habit to campaign for people's support sing tangible items. If you are running a political rally and invite Nigerians to come with a note that there is also going to be a feast or party which would normally involved eating, you are more likely going to get a lot of people at that rally than if you invited them without any likelihood of them eating at your expense. When public outings are marked in Nigeria, one of the things they normally like checking out is what's on item 7 a.k.a. the Food menu for without an item 7, there is really no need for them to come out. Nigerians love to eat even though most of them are not considered hungry persons but they just love the idea of free food and that's why even at funerals or wake-keepings, most Nigerians visit the beareaved family to say sorry but won't leave without eating food too.The way to the heart of many Nigerians is through food and that's why politicians like to distribute food items to them so that they can at least give him a listening ear.
