Although, it took a long time in coming, it now appears that the next governor of Lagos state might is most likely going to be a Christian. The last time Lagos state had a Christian governor was during the time of Sir Michael Otedola and he entered into office in 1992, staying only for about 1 year before his office was cut short by the military and a Muslim Administrator took power in Lagos.Since the return to Democratic rule in 1999, the office of governor has mostly being occupied by politicians who profess the Islamic faith and this includes Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola.Lagos is one of the most populated states in Nigeria that has a mix of people from both the Christian and Islamic faiths and so there has been some clamour for a Christian governor for a while prior to the end of Fashola's administration. As at January 2015, the 2 major political parties hoping to win the governorship election in Lagos state have already presented Christian candidates and the probability that one of them will win is high. The ruling APC has presented a Christian candidate named Akinwunmi Ambode while the strong opposition party, the PDP has also presented a Christian candidate named Jimi Agbaje. They are both Christians and they are counting on the votes of both Christians and Muslims in Lagos state to become their governor for the next 4 years. The ruling party in Lagos strongly supports Ambode and they hope to remain in party while the PDP is looking to break the stronghold which the APC has made in the state for the past 16 years.Who wins? Only time will tell.
