A current governor in a South Western state of Nigeria wants to be the next president of Nigeria and he is really serious about it. He has been the most vocal opposition voice since President Buhari took office and now it seems we are finding out what his reasons were all along.Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has declared his intention to seek for the office of President in 2019 under the platform of the former ruling People's Democratic Party. The PDP has been the ruling party in Nigeria for 16 years until a relatively new opposition party took power just 2 years ago. The general elections in 2015 was strongly contested between the APC and PDP also although it was won the APC, the PDP still had some solid gains mostly in the Southern regions of Nigeria. If Fayose were to really run for the office in 2019, he may have some huge challenges to face such as the fact that he could be running against an incumbent and popular candidate named Buhari. He may also be going against his party's resolve to give the ticket to a candidate from the north based on a rotational policy that is not officially written on paper.Does Fayose have a right to contest under the PDP? Yes. Will be be able to win? He could, since he has proven himself historically as being capable of winning incumbent leaders while they were still in office. He did that twice in 20003 and 2014 becoming the only Nigerian politician who has ever defeated incumbent leaders twice.Besides, Fayose would have a fighting chance since he is a major opposition voice who has criticized a lot of things about the current government which many unsatisfied Nigerians would agree to.Issues where the current President and government appear to be be failing would be among the things Fayose has been and would keep using to fight his way to aso rock in 2019.Governor Fayose has spoken against the ruling government on issues such as the inflation by comparing the economic condition of the ordinary man under a PDP government to the APC government. According to Fayose, "Regrettably, a bag of rice that was N7, 000 when PDP was in government is now N17, 000" and again "Exchange Rate that was N197/dollar in 2015 is now over N360/dollar".Fayose has also criticized the way and manner the current President's health has been handled privately without adequately informing the public. He has also spoken against the unconstitutional use of force on unarmed Pro-Biafrans and El-Zakzaky followers while in a democratic dispensation. If one were to look at some of the things the governor has been saying, they seem to make some sense and those are issued which Nigerians would want a justified answer from the incumbent before deciding on who to vote for in 2019.I think Fayose has a good chance of winning the elections in 2019 but his chances could be brighter if President Buhari doesn't contest then and the PDP also give him all the support he needs when the 2019 general elections comes around.
