The Presidential elections were held in Nigeria on the 23rd of February 2019 and one thing that happened is that the incumbent President just won a re-election to serve in office for another 4 years. Defeating a sitting President is something no political candidate has ever done in Nigeria's history except Buhari who defeated President Jonathan Goodluck in the 2015 elections. According to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Buhari defeated Atiku in what was popularly regarded as a highly contested election between the former ruling PDP and the APC. President Buhari got 15,191,847 votes to defeat his closest rival Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who got 11,262,978 and that is a difference of 3,928,869 votes.Atiku Abubakar was a Vice President of Nigeria for a period of 8 years when Obasanjo was the president and this was from 1999 to 2017 and this was during the start of the 4th republic after Nigeria transited from military to civilian rule. Buhari on the other hand had been in the military and was once head of state from after a coup that overthrew the civilian administration of Shehu Shagari in 1983 and ruled till 1985 before being overthrown by military officers. Buhari came back into politics and after a series of Presidential campaigns and elections for 3 times before winning it the fourth time.During the Presidential elections held in 2019, Buhari got the bulk of his votes from northern Nigeria while Atiku got most of his from Southern Nigeria but the incumbent President won by bigger margins in places where he is popular. However the election was not entirely smooth sailing or without hitches in some places as results are still being contested and rejected by the opposition. The ruling opposition party has gone to court to get copies of the results so as to be able to make a solid case in court. As it is, President Buhari and the APC are likely to keep growing stronger politically till the next 4 years as long as they keep their most Nigerians happy by making the country better.
