The 2020 gubernatorial election has been held in Edo state and the ruling party has now become the opposition party after an election whose outcome could not easily be predicted from the start.Governor Obaseki had been governor of the state for almost 4 years and he was entitled by Nigerian law to run again for a second term. He had run his first campaign on the platform of the APC but was denied the option of continuing in office by his former party during the primary election. The official explanation given by his former party was that he did not have the educational requirement needed to be governor despite the fact that the issue was not raised at the first time when he was presented by his party as their candidate. However, prior to this he had been in a political battle amidst war of words with his party's former national chairman who was also a former governor of the state. The elections has been held and resukts published but the APC lost the election to the PDP which was the political party the sitting governor switched to after he was rejected by the APC.Here are a couple of reasons why I think the APC lost Edo state to the PDP as at the last govenorsbip election in 2020.1. Good public image of the sitting governor: During his first 4 years as governor, Obaseki has won the favour and approval of the people and so they wanted him to go for another term irrespective of which political party he belonged to.2. Party injustice: In the eyes of the public, it appeared that Obaseki was wrongly denied the ticket even when he has a right to go for a second term and the people did not approve of him being denied to contest at the primary.3. The public disapproval of godfatherism: Edo people didnt seem to like the idea of being told who to vote for and so they didnt like APC and Oshiomhole or Tinubu's tactics of using their influence to choose a leader or governor for them. The slogan "Edo no be Lagos" used by the PDP as part of their campaign also paid off as it made more Edo people come out to vote against what they perceived to be Lagos state style of godfatherism.4. Bad state of economy run by APC at Federal level: On the state of the nation, many Nigerians including Edo people have not been happy with the way the APC has been running the country because if they were, they would have voted for them during tbe ekection. Some of the recent unpopular things which the APC govt did that brought public disapprovals includes raise of petrol price, inflation, electricity tariff hike and so on. Most of those actions and the state of the economy as a whole has not improved the public rating of the govt and hence this election might be a sign that the APC led govt needs to save its public image if they want to win the 2023 Presidential election.
