Is Buhari the cause of every bad thing that happens to Nigerians? Some Nigerians think so because it's Nigerian to blame the President for everything. When 1 dollar equals 300 Naira, they say na Buhari cause am.When government agencies arrest opposition leaders, they say na Buhari cause am.When people are kept in detention without bail and without being charged to court, they say na Buhari cause am.When election tribunals rule in favour of Buhari's political party, they say na Buhari cause am.When lassa fever breaks out, they say na Buhari cause am.When opposition politicians die while being persecuted by government agencies, they say na Buhari cause am.When minimum wage is no longer enough to
feed a family, they say na Buhari cause am.When people are agitating for Biafra, they say na Buhari cause am.When Nigeria is gradually becoming a one party state, they say na Buhari cause am.When Niger Delta boys are being persecuted for being corrupt, they say na Buhari cause am.When oil pipelines are being blown up in the Niger Delta, they say na Buhari cause am.When key positions in government are given to mostly Northerners, they say na Buhari cause am.But how did Buhari cause it? Is it because he won an election as the oldest presidential candidate in Nigeria's history? Is it because under-aged voters supposedly voted for him? Was it because the military tactically supported his election since he was a retired army General? Is it just because he's currently the President of Nigeria? It's a common thing for Nigerians to blame their President when bad things happen because they believe the President is the most influential person in the country who can direct what happens where and when. You can't really blame Nigerians because the president of Nigeria has a duty to perform certain things as well as fulfilling his election promises. I've not seen a time in Nigeria's history when Presidents were not blamed for one bad thing or another. The Military rulers have had their own share of blame for the woes that affected our economy and so have the civilian Presidents.A President of Nigeria has a duty to be law abiding and support the rule of law without disobeying court laws. When elders don't obey court laws, it encourages the ordinary people to become lawless themselves and the society gradually starts to break down.Nigerians look up a lot to their leaders and to especially their President because he has the unilateral power to do certain things well. The President can help improve the living standards of people by providing a decent minimum wage, improving security and making the economy viable through policies within his control and even without much obstruction from other arms of government. When a Nigerian President does good that reaches the people, he is more likely to receive praises from the people but when he makes policies that push the people to the wall, they would only protest and blame him for all their misfortunes.
