The United States of America is a democratic country which many nations across the world want to copy because of their economic success and the way they do their politics. Lately, there has been a lot of media coverage around 2 important people who are running to become the next president after Obama leaves office and they are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.Hillary Clinton has been in politics for a time and is a wife to a former president named Bill Clinton. Donald Trump on the other hand has been more of a business man an celebrity who dabbled into politics with a goal to Make America Great Again. While the US prepares for their Presidential election which is coming up on Tuesday November 8th 2016, some Nigerians have reacted to the political issues raised up by the 2 leading candidates and while some have supported Hillary all the way, some like me prefer someone like Trump for President. In my family in Nigeria for instance, we were discussing about it and noticed that we were in fact divided on the issue. I and my immediate brother supported Trump because he seemed determined to do something different from what Obama and Hillary were already doing while my other brother supported Clinton claiming that Trump is more anti-immigrant or racist. If I was a US citizen and allowed to vote, I would vote for Trump and it's not because he is the best candidate in the history of the US Presidential elections but because he is raising issues which Clinton seems to be ignoring or avoiding. I think the US government needs a bit of shakeup in things like immigration and religious rights. Other issues are related to gender and morality. On the issue of religious rights, as a Christian and Catholic, I really didn't like the fact that under President Obama's health care reforms, the Church is being forced to promote things like abortion and birth control when it's against their religious beliefs. I don't think that the government or a president of a Christian nation should be the one spearheading things that go against a church's religious rights. Chances are that if Clinton wins the election, she would continue with Obama's legacy and this means more persecution to religion. On the issue of immigration, it appears that Obama and Clinton is more inclined to allow more immigrants into the USA unlike Trump who has said time and again that the USA needs to place a ceiling on it especially for immigrants coming from terrorist nations. I think this is a patriotic thing that Trump is doing because every nation needs to protect their own people and culture first before outsiders. It won't be nice if immigrants got most of the jobs while Americans remain jobless. I think that many Americans are worried that there is little or no control on immigration and it's increasing crime, eroding the culture and reducing the standard of living on average Americans. The US needs to control it's population and one way it can do that is by controlling immigration.I remember a similar scenario played in Nigeria in the 1980s when Nigerians were tired of having Ghanaians taking over their country economically and so they seemed to be screaming "Ghana Must Go!". If Nigeria had controlled the number of immigrants from Ghana, it won't get to a stage when Nigerians would feel their economy has been taken over by Ghanaians. There is also the issue of gay marriage in the USA which President Obama supported and which finally got approval at the Supreme court but which has also divided the USA along religious lines. As a Christian and Catholic, I find it unacceptable and I believe a lot of Nigerians think this way and that's why there is even an anti-gay law in Nigeria. Compared to Clinton, Trump may not be an angel but he seemed to have been more on the side of Christians who are anti-gay than Clinton and Obama who have been mostly liberal or pro-gay.On the issue of gender, when it comes to elections in Nigeria, most people tend to vote for men over women as men are more likely to win elections in Nigeria. I guess it's because men are more in control on politics in Nigeria than women and are also better educated than them. Sure, there are a lot of educated women but even some of the educated ones prefer men to be in charge because it's culturally acceptable among most tribes in Nigeria and so it would really be hard to have a woman winning a political election when she's running against a man. So. most Nigerians are more likely to vote for Trump rather than Clinton just because he's the last man standing. So, if I were an American citizen, I would vote for Trump based on the above reasons and I believe that many Nigerians too would. However, by Nigerian standards, even Trump would be considered too vulgar as Nigerians prefer people who talk with decency and respect. However, Trump would be a more preferred candidate to Clinton among Nigerian voters if the election was held in Nigeria. For Nigerians who are immigrants in the US or frequent visitors there, I guess they would more likely vote for Clinton rather than Trump because they would want the immigration doors to remain open and for immigrants to have more opportunities to grow economically and those are not things that Donald Trump is promoting.
